Als Ruby aufwacht, weiß sie sofort, dass sie nicht in ihrem eigenen Bett liegt. Doch das ist nur der Beginn ihres Albtraums. Jemand hält sie gefangen, in einem Zimmer, das an ein Puppenhaus erinnert. Am anderen Ende der Stadt: Familienidylle, ein Tag am Strand. Bis eines der Kinder beim Spielen eine Frauenleiche entdeckt, tief vergraben im Sand. Vor Ort birgt die Polizei weitere Opfer. Allerdings hat niemand sie als vermisst gemeldet, weder Eltern noch Freunde - für D. I. Helen Grace Beweis genug, dass sie es mit einem Täter zu tun hat, der extrem klug und vorsichtig agiert. Und plötzlich begreift sie, dass für jemanden die Uhr ticken könnte, der noch am Leben ist.
